Penobscot Bay Ringers Presents Concert Proceeds to BBBSMCM

The Board of Directors of Penobscot Bay Ringers recently presented a check in the amount of $400 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine. The check represented concert donations collected at their October 16^th Bells by the Bay handbell concert. Rockport, Maine -- Penobscot Bay Ringers, Midcoast Maine's first and only community handbell choir, recently presented a check in the amount of $400 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine. The money was collected as a free-will offering at the group’s second annual Bells by the Bay concert, which was held on Sunday, October 16^that the First Congregational Church of Camden.

“We thank our audience for being so supportive of our music and our mission,” said Amy Rollins, President of Penobscot Bay Ringers. “We raised a great deal of money for the purchase of our instruments earlier this year, so it was only fitting to pay it forward in with our Bells by the Bay concert this year.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides opportunities for children who face adversity in their lives, including those living in single parent or low income homes, or those who struggle academically or socially. Starting something begins with finding a great match between a Big and a Little. “These matches are made possible by the generosity of community donors like Penobscot Bay Ringers,” said Alex Gaeth, Chief Executive Officer for the Midcoast Maine chapter. “This donation will change lives by matching children, ages 5 through 14, with teen or adult role models in one-to-one relationships.”

Penobscot Bay Ringers will be appearing in Ringing in the Season, a concert featuring four handbell choirs, on Saturday, December 3^rd, at 4:00 pm, at the First Congregational Church of Camden. They will also perform at The Farnsworth Art Museum’s Share the Wonder events on the afternoon of Sunday, December 4^th starting at 3:00 pm. 2011 Bids for Kids Wreath Auction!

More than 400 wreaths are now on display at 15 locations throughout Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot and Waldo Counties. They are all part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine’s 15^th Annual “Bids for Kids” Wreath Auction which starts on Nov. 23 and continues through Dec. 2. Proceeds from the fundraising auction support the non-profit organization’s youth mentoring program throughout the 4-county area.

“We’ve grown the event significantly this year,” says event coordinator Cathy Hardy. “This is our first year to expand the event into Penobscot County, and we’ve added 80 wreaths in that area, plus we’ve increased the number of wreaths in the Midcoast area as well. We’re particularly excited by the number of new businesses who have decorated wreaths for the first time. We’re also grateful for the help of many new volunteers who have stepped up this year to help with the event,” Hardy says. These include associates from Bank of America, Camden National Bank, Bath Savings Institution, and members of the Midcoast Roller Derby team.

Big and Little matches in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program are also decorating wreaths, as are students from the Riley School who are decorating 10 wreaths as part of their art class. All of the children’s wreaths will be loaded with gift certificates from local businesses which will include dining packages; tickets and passes to local attractions; Chamber of Commerce memberships; golf packages and more, as well as the children’s special handmade ornaments.

Volunteers will pick up the decorated wreaths from businesses and deliver them to Camden National Bank branch offices in Knox, Lincoln, Penobscot and Waldo County, where they will be on display from Nov. 23 to Dec. 1. People can leave silent auction bids on their favorite wreaths up until 4:00 pm on Dec. 1, and will be notified on Dec. 2 if they are the winning bidder. For those who fall in love with a particular wreath and want to purchase it on the spot, they can do so by paying the full value price of the wreath. “By paying the full price, they can take the wreath home with them and put it on their front door that very day,” Hardy says.

More than 80 wreaths valued at $100 or more will be featured in one of three Live Auctions being held at the Mid-Coast Recreation Center in Rockport (Nov. 30 from 5-7 pm); at the Bangor Mall (Dec. 1 from 6-7 pm); and at the Damariscotta River Grill in Damariscotta (Dec. 2 from 5-6 pm). The public is invited to attend all of these Live Auctions and bid on their favorite wreaths. John Bottero from Thomaston Place Auction Galleries is the benefit auctioneer for all three events. Those who can’t make it to the Live Auctions can still leave online bids!

Some of the early wreaths that have come in include: an exciting Red Sox package with two State Street Pavilion Seats donated by James Brannon; an overnight windjammer cruise for 2 aboard the Schooner Isaac Evans; a lobster dinner cruise for 2 on the M/V Rendezvous; a beautiful rocking chair from Franz Furniture (on display at the Rockland branch of Camden National Bank); YMCA and health club memberships; an Eric Hopkins framed watercolor; gift certificates from local stores and restaurants; concert tickets; and many extravagant spa and salon packages.

BBBSMCM Seeks School Coordinators for 2011-2012 School Year!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine (BBBSMCM) is looking for community minded volunteers to serve as School Coordinators at its School-Based Mentoring sites this fall. Coordinators are adults from the community who can dedicate 1½ hours for one day each week from October through May (except school vacation weeks) to be at the match meetings of high school and college-aged Bigs and their elementary and middle-school aged Littles. The meetings take place after school, generally from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.

Every school mentoring location has 1-2 coordinators who attend each week to oversee and supervise the weekly match meetings to ensure match quality and child safety. School Coordinators are interviewed in person and screened and trained by a professional BBBSMCM staff member. Ongoing training opportunities, including a summer School Coordinator orientation for all new and returning volunteers, are also provided by BBBSMCM staff.

Successful School Coordinators are responsible, dedicated, love working with and coaching youth of all ages and backgrounds, have great listening skills, are willing to learn, love to play, have patience, flexibility and a sense of humor. Coordinators arrive early to greet the Bigs and Littles. They help set up and clean up meeting supplies and snacks, facilitate group match activities if appropriate, and coach Bigs as they navigate their relationships with their Littles. Coordinators have regular weekly contact with BBBSMCM staff to discuss match meeting and site logistics, attendance, successes, issues and concerns.

The agency is looking for School Coordinators at the following sites for the 2011-12 school year:

Knox County—Appleton Village School, Camden-Rockport Elementary School, Hope Elementary School, South School (Rockland), and Warren Community School

Lincoln County—Great Salt Bay (Damariscotta), Miller Elementary School (Waldoboro), Nobleboro Central School, and Wiscasset Primary School

Waldo County—Captain Albert Stevens School (Belfast), Lincolnville Central School, Leroy Smith (Winterport), Mt. View Elementary (Thorndike), Searsport Middle/High School, Unity College, and Wagner Middle School (Winterport).

“Being a School Coordinator is a great way to become involved with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization,” says Katie Orlando, the agency’s School-Based Mentoring Director. “Last year, I was the School Coordinator for Lincolnville Central School and spent an hour each Thursday afternoon with Bigs and Littles as they did arts and crafts projects, played board games, or played outside or in the gym. Other times I planned fun, low or no-cost special activities like baking sugar cookies for the school staff (and each other) or a photo scavenger hunt.”

Coordinators spend time with each Big and Little, observing interactions, and coaching Bigs as they learn more about their Littles and the adversities they may be facing in their lives. Coordinators help Bigs and Littles discover more about themselves through the match experience. Bigs in the program see the huge impact they make in their Little’s life by being there each week, and the Littles benefit from having an older, positive role model and a friend they can count on.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine (BBBSMCM) has opened its new office at the Bangor Y at 17 Second St. in Bangor. The agency is partnering with the Bangor Y and the University of Maine, Orono, to provide 1-to-1 youth mentoring services in Penobscot County. The agency presently offers mentoring services to more than 300 youth in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo Counties, and will be adding another 180 youth through their expansion into Penobscot County.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides mentoring services to children ages 5-14 facing adversity. Many come from single parent or divorced families with low income, and struggle socially and academically. Some have behavioral challenges, perform poorly in school, have low self-esteem, may distrust others or disregard authority. Matching these children with an older youth or adult allows them to receive support, guidance, encouragement, and a positive role model as they learn to become confident and caring members of their family, school and community. BBBS nurtures each of these matches with training, activities and professional support.

“Our goal for 2011 is to create and professionally support 100 matches in Penobscot County which would serve 180 youth. By year 3, we will grow to 125 matches, serving nearly 250 youth,” says Alex Gaeth, CEO for BBBSMCM. "The Bangor Y has been a natural partner for us, since their group mentoring perfectly complements our 1-to-1 mentoring. The Y has generously provided this conveniently located office space for our Penobscot County work.”

At the start of the school year in September, the agency will be launching School-Based Mentoring at the Downeast and Fairmount Schools in Bangor; Lewis S. Libby School in Milford; Veazie Community School; and Leonard Middle School and Old Town Elementary School in Old Town; and at Leroy H. Smith School and Samuel L. Wagner Middle School in WInterport. Children at these schools will be matched with high school students from Bangor High School and Hampden Academy and college students from the University of Maine.

Mike Seile, CEO of the Bangor Y, says, “Working together with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine was a natural fit, as both of our organizations are focused on Youth Development. Together, we can provide mentoring opportunities in group sessions here at the Y, while implementing the proven 1-to-1 School-Based Mentoring and Community-Based Mentoring models that BBBS is known for throughout the community. It’s exciting to have a delivery model that makes sure all youth have access to positive role models. Our Y is committed to working together with agencies like BBBS of Midcoast Maine, to ensure critical programming like this continues in Penobscot County, and without duplication of services.”

2011 Knox, Lincoln & Waldo Counties Bowl for Kids' Sake Award Winners

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine thanked and recognized the top fundraisers for this year’s Bowl For Kids’ Sake event at a special awards ceremony on June 15. The event was held at Bank of America in Belfast. More than 215 teams and 880 bowlers – the largest number ever – participated in the Midcoast Bowl For Kids’ Sake event, which took place from April 25 – May 7. The event generated over $83,000 to support the agency’s Big/Little matches, an increase of $11,000 over last year’s event.

“This event is our largest fundraiser of the year,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO Alex Gaeth. “The revenues raised make it possible for us to run our School-Based and Community-Based Mentoring, which benefits over 300 youth annually in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo Counties. The support we receive from the community for this event is incredible and continues to grow every year,” he says.

Event Coordinator Cathy Hardy presented a Special Recognition plaque to Shawn Doll, Senior Vice President of Bank of America, Belfast, for the company’s significant contribution and support. Altogether, 91 teams from Bank of America raised more than $35,700. The top team fundraiser from Bank of America was “The Cuckoo Birds” captained by Glenn Reed of Bank of America. His team raised $1,664.

The event’s overall top fundraiser was Danny Jackson, from Camden National Bank in Waldoboro, who raised more than $5,100 in pledges. Jackson’s team also captured the Top Team Fundraiser trophy, raising over $5,300. George Sawyer of New Harbor was the second highest fundraiser with over $2,000, and Jennifer Smith, a 10-year old from the Miller School in Waldoboro, finished third with $900. Smith is the first youth ever to finish as one of the top three fundraisers.

Several raffle drawings were held, with Heaven Wadford from Nobleboro School winning the “Littles” drawing and Trenton Stewart of Medomak Valley High School winning the “Bigs” drawing. Each won a $100 Wal-Mart gift card.

All adult bowlers who raised more than $100 in pledges were entered into the Grand Prize raffle drawing. The two grand prizes were won by Cassielee Lynds of Bank of America and Ray DeGrass of Dragon Products. Lynds won a package featuring an overnight stay at the Samoset Resort, his and hers massages from Skin Klinic and Day Spa, and dinner for two at Café Miranda. DeGrass won a 32” Toshiba flat screen television from Agren Appliances.

BBBSMCM Welcomes Community-Based Mentoring Director

In January, 2011, Big Brothers Big Sister of Midcoast Maine (BBBSMCM) added Penobscot County to its service area. With the addition of this County, BBBSMCM has expanded its staff, and Dolly Van Fossan was recently hired as the Community-Based Mentoring Director.

After spending three years as a Big Sister in Gratiot County, Michigan, Dolly decided she wanted to have a bigger role with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. A job posting on the national website led her to Midcoast Maine, where she hoped to live near the ocean, while applying her knowledge of sociology to the "real" world, and serve youth in a new community.

Dolly graduated from Alma College, a private, 4-year liberal arts college in mid-Michigan, where she also worked as a web writing intern. "I believe even the smallest acts of good create positive, indelible impact in the world," Dolly says. "Because of that, I am eager to support mentors in building meaningful and unforgettable friendships with youth." In her spare time, Dolly enjoys swimming laps, reading and writing fiction, and spending time with her one-eyed calico, "Kitty."

As part of the Penobscot County expansion, BBBSMCM has opened an office at the Bangor Y on Second St. in Bangor. Alex Gaeth, BBBSMCM CEO states “We are thrilled to add Dolly to our team. She brings great experience as a Big Sister to our agency. Her education and skills will be instrumental as we continue to expand to provide youth with opportunities to succeed in the coming years.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters Hires School-Based Mentoring Manager

In January, 2011, Big Brothers Big Sister of Midcoast Maine (BBBSMCM) added Penobscot County to its service area, joining the three counties it presently serves (Knox, Lincoln and Waldo). With this expanded service area, the agency added to its staff by recently hiring Matt Donahue as the School-Based Mentoring Manager.

Donahue, a Bangor native, attended the University of Maine and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Public Management and will be completing his Master’s Degree in Public Administration in August. He was heavily involved both on and off campus, and has a passion for the community. He is a brother of Alpha Delta, a community service based Fraternity, a Senior Skull, and is the Vice President of the Class of 2010 Council. He is entering his 11^th year as a volunteer umpire for Little League Baseball and serves on the City of Bangor Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and Special Committee on Comprehensive Planning.

Donahue is extremely excited about this new position. “This is a wonderful opportunity to stay in Maine and to be able to give back to the community that supported me so much in my life. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine staff and volunteers are tremendously dedicated to the mission and it is a pleasure to join them. The long-term impact we have on youth in our community is a remarkable accomplishment and something I am proud to work towards.”

As part of the expansion, BBBSMCM has opened an office at the Bangor Y on Second St. in Bangor. Alex Gaeth, BBBSMCM CEO says, “We are excited about the skills Matt brings to our team and the opportunity which lies before us. Hundreds more youth will have opportunities to succeed as a result of this addition to our agency and service area.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides mentoring services to children ages 5-14 facing adversity. Many come from single parent or divorced families with low income, and struggle socially and academically. Some have behavioral challenges, perform poorly in school, have low self-esteem, or may distrust others or disregard authority. Matching these children with an older youth or adult allows them to receive support, guidance, encouragement, and a positive role model as they learn to become confident and caring members of their family, school and community. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine is looking for businesses, organizations and individuals to support and participate in its annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake event. The event will take place from April 25 to May 18 at All-Play Family Entertainment Center in Waldoboro (April 25, 26, 30); Point Lookout Lanes in Northport (April 28, May 1, 2, 3) Oakland Park Lanes in Rockport (May 6, 7). Family Fun Lanes in Bangor (May 11, 14, 18), Bangor-Brewer Bowling Center in Brewer (May 10, 13, 15) and Old Town Lanes in Old Town (May 17).

Last year’s event drew 207 teams and 800 bowlers, and raised $72,000 to support BBBSMCM’s youth mentoring programs. This year, the agency is looking to expand the event even more, with a goal of 300 teams and 1,200 bowlers, according to Event Coordinator Cathy Hardy. “You don’t have to be a good bowler – just be willing to help support Big Brothers Big Sisters. This event is our largest annual fundraiser,” she says. A cornerstone of the event has been the participation of Bank of America. Last year, 96 teams from Bank of America participated in the event, and over 100 teams are expected for this year’s event.

“We challenge everyone – business and community leaders, service clubs, public safety organizations, town councilors and selectmen, individuals and their friends, families and neighbors, as well as others who may not have time to mentor a child but would like to support Big Brothers Big Sisters mission – to join Bowl For Kids’ Sake and start something to change the life of a child forever,” says BBBSMCM’s CEO Alex Gaeth. “Bowl For Kids’ Sake brings the whole community together in support of a positive future for our kids. No matter how someone chooses to be involved, as a bowler, team captain, or sponsor, each person has a hand in helping to start a child on the right path. Every dollar raised through Bowl for Kids’ Sake directly funds our mentoring programs in Knox, Lincoln, Waldo and Penobscot Counties and helps to maintain and sustain our mentoring relationships, increasing kids’ chances for success.”

Local businesses can support the event by becoming event and lane sponsors and encouraging their employees to participate as Team Captains and team members. These individuals then raise money by soliciting pledges from people they know. Each bowler is encouraged to raise a minimum of $50 in pledges, and those who raise $100 or more are entered in raffle drawings to win prizes.

Another exciting thing about this event is the participation of Bigs and Littles. All of the agency’s program schools (13 local elementary schools, 6 local high schools, and The Community School) are invited to bowl and help raise pledges for their school’s programs.

Karen and Kaytlyn love to bake together as one of their fun weekly activities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine is celebrating National Mentor Month and is looking to find more mentors to work with youth from our community and help more children in Knox, Lincoln and Waldo Counties achieve success in life.

Karen, a mentor and Big Sister from Owls Head, knows firsthand how important it is for people to become mentors. Although her children are grown, she saw the need many youth in the community have for a special adult in their life to give them one-on-one attention. In October, 2009, Karen was matched with her Little Sister Kaytlyn, now 8 years old, from Rockland, and they have been “sisters” ever since. They spend a few hours together each week, doing fun things in the community that Kaytlyn might not have an opportunity to do otherwise.

At first they went to the library and read books together. Then they started going to Karen’s house and playing games and baking together. They made Halloween cookies and a Thanksgiving pie for Kaytlyn’s family, and holiday cupcakes for all of her teachers. They even made a special apron for Kaytlyn to wear each time they bake together. Sometimes instead of baking, they cook dinner together or enjoy activities in the community. They’ve been mini-golfing, to the beach, to the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. For a special birthday present, Karen took Kaytlyn horseback riding. Afterward, they made a photo album with pictures from the experience. Next to horseback riding and baking, Kaytlyn says that her other favorite things to do with Karen are “reading books, playing outside, making snowmen, and bringing in wood from the wood pile.”

Even with Karen’s busy schedule, which includes her family and a full-time job, she has been able to find the few hours each week it takes to make a difference in a child’s life. “Time goes fast – usually we spend 3 hours together right after school and when it’s 6PM it’s hard to believe the time passed so quickly! All adults have a few hours of free time each week. Spending those hours with a child and the impact it has on their life is a good thing, a positive thing—you’re helping someone in your own community. I was nervous that I’d have a hard time finding the time to meet with Kaytlyn but it has been so easy. You only meet once a week and for us, meeting the same time every week helped us get on a schedule,” says Karen.

The mentor experience is not about spending money to have fun—it’s about spending fun time together. “The most precious time we’ve spent has been doing no or low cost activities that are fun for both of us. Whether it is window shopping on Main Street or going to the beach, you do things with your Little that you would be doing anyway.”

Karen has seen the impact she’s had on Kaytlyn’s life. “Kaytlyn talks more and she talks about things with clarity and confidence. She remembers things we’ve done and talks about those experiences with other people at her school who have told me how important the time we’ve spent together has been.”

Kaytlyn’s mom, Beth, has seen the difference Karen has made. “Kaytlyn has so much happiness and joy on her face when it’s Tuesday; ‘Karen Day’! Karen has taught her so much, from cracking eggs without getting the shells in the bowl, to working on reading and speech skills. Kaytlyn struggled in school from day one but she’s making more progress since she’s met Karen. They sit down and read together and do other activities that help Kaytlyn learn. Karen uses baking and cooking to help her with math. Her speech has also improved greatly. Because of Karen, Kaytlyn is coming along very well now in school. This match has been huge for Kaytlyn’s growth as a person,” Beth says.

Beth knows firsthand why mentors are so important to kids like Kaytlyn. “Mentors give kids somebody else to look to besides a parent and family; someone they can confide in if they want to. If every kid just had one mentor in their life, their attitude and grades at school and overall appearance would improve. Karen and Kaytlyn are going to be lifelong friends, even beyond Big Brothers and Big Sisters—that’s how much Karen has impacted Kaytlyn’s life. “Karen is passionate, funny, trustworthy, and great with Kaytlyn – she’s a part of our family, a part of all of us,” Beth concludes.

To be a mentor, you don't need special skills – just the ability to listen and offer friendship, guidance and encouragement to a young person. Mentors inspire youth to do their best and achieve their dreams; they encourage youth to stay in school, keep focused and seize the opportunities waiting for them and help youth discover and nurture their passions in life.

Children who are mentored are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and peers, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, become pregnant, abuse drugs or become involved in criminal activity. Last year, local children who participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine’s youth mentoring programs experienced:

93% increase in self-confidence
92% increase in showing trust towards their mentor
89% increase in positive attitude towards school
87% increase in ability to express feelings

Big Sister Lisa helps Little Sister Elizabeth get ready for prom.

When Elizabeth was in 4th grade she wanted to meet someone new—an adult—who would share a few hours of their week doing something fun together. Elizabeth found that special friend through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midcoast Maine. In May 2004 she was matched with her “Big”, Lisa, and that marked the beginning of a rewarding mentorship and friendship.

Lisa wanted to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters because she has always enjoyed being around kids. “They are interesting and fun and you learn a lot from them. I was busy at work but I still had some free time. I wanted to find something that would be fun for me to do but rewarding, too. Big Brothers Big Sisters was the first thing I thought of.”

Elizabeth remembers Lisa from the very first day she met her. A staff member from BBBS introduced Lisa to Elizabeth and her family at their Camden home. “I was intimidated at first and shy—Lisa was new to me—but it didn’t take long for me to start opening up to her and to realize that she was a really fun person who cared about me.”

Lisa and Elizabeth met weekly for a few hours and have done many different activities together. Elizabeth was a shy and conservative kid, and as their relationship developed, Lisa pushed her out of her comfort zone. They traveled to different places together in Knox and Waldo Counties and explored; they played mini golf; they visited different places for tea and a snack. One of Elizabeth’s fondest memories with Lisa is visiting one of Lisa’s friends at the Cellar Door Winery and squishing grapes together. Lisa fondly remembers a camping trip they took. “It started out like any typical camping trip would. We took a ton of food and our kayaks, drove to our site and we put our tent up. Then, all of a sudden Elizabeth pulled out a gigantic air mattress with an electric air pump! It was one of the most comfortable camping trips ever!”

Some of the most precious time together was spent closer to home. Elizabeth says, “Lisa owns a catering business and loves to cook. We would go to her home and cook things together. I never cooked before I met her, but she opened me up to many new things, like sushi! Learning how to make sushi and that I actually liked to eat it was something I never would have known if I hadn’t met Lisa.” Lisa also exposed Elizabeth to kayaking – another experience they have enjoyed together.

Now a junior in high school, Elizabeth is about to take the next important step in her life – college. She credits people in her life like Lisa for helping her get to this point. “Lisa helped me grow as a person, was there for me, and I could always talk to her about things I didn't want to talk about with my friends or family.” Elizabeth and Lisa are still very close today, and even though their schedules are busier, they still make time to see each other and chat over the phone whenever they can. Elizabeth knows that Lisa will always be an important person in her life.

Community-Based Mentoring is the traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters relationship. It’s all about one-to-one time spent with an adult volunteer and a child doing things they both enjoy — spending a few hours a week filled with shared interests and activities like playing board games, shooting hoops, sharing a pizza, baking cookies, taking a walk in the park or just hanging out and talking.

BBBS mentoring programs work because they pair a screened, trained volunteer with a child who has similar interests and together they receive professional support as their relationship grows. The schedule of when Bigs and Littles meet is also flexible to meet the needs of the mentor and youth. Some Bigs meet their Littles on the weekend—others get together after school. There’s almost no one so busy that they can’t find a way to fit in a few hours a week.

Lisa has many great things to say about her experience as a Big Sister. “I love hanging out with Elizabeth—we have a blast together. Watching her grow up was one of the most rewarding experiences. She’s even taller than me now! She’s amazing—she’s a straight A student and very involved in school. She’s also a talented athlete and musician.”

Elizabeth knows first-hand how important it is for adults to volunteer to become Big Brothers and Sisters. “No matter what age you are, having someone in your life that’s a close friend and able to help you and teach you new things is really important. The program is also a great source for helping kids have someone consistently in their life.” Elizabeth’s story shows that it truly does only take a few hours a week to make a difference in a child’s life.
